Bank of Japan Keeps Interest Rates Unchanged at 0.25% While Assessing Economic Conditions
The Bank of Japan maintained its benchmark interest rate at 0.25% following its two-day meeting on December 18-19,
emphasizing the need for additional time to evaluate the impact of external factors on the domestic economy.
Eight members of the Board of Governors voted to maintain the rate, while only one member, Naoki Tamura, supported raising it to 0.50%.
In its statement, the bank noted that uncertainties surrounding economic activity
and prices remain high while observing a shift in corporate behavior toward increasing wages and prices.
It also highlighted that the impact of exchange rates on the domestic economy has become more pronounced compared to previous periods.
The decision came amidst divided expectations among economists,
with some predicting rate stabilization and others anticipating a hike.
The decision reflects the Bank of Japan’s cautious approach to addressing domestic and global economic challenges.
Decline in New Car Sales in Europe During November
According to European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association data, New car sales fell by 2% in November,
reaching 1.06 million vehicles. The decline was primarily attributed to reduced demand in France and Italy, alongside a weak German market.
Sales of fully electric vehicles in the European Union dropped sharply by 9.5%,
affected by declining sales in France and Germany. In contrast, sales of hybrid cars grew by 18.5%,
continuing their upward trend for the third consecutive month.
The association noted that electric vehicles, including hybrids,
accounted for 55.8% of total car sales in the EU last month,
compared to 51.8% during the same period last year.
